SKIPPERS TICKET COURSE OVERVIEW

Courses run most mornings during the season. Please check availability of afternoons. Our main location is Hillarys Boat Harbour, but we occasionally run courses elsewhere such as Mindarie Marina [location currently unavailable] and Perth CBD/Swan River [location currently unavailable] (next to the Bell Tower) Barrack Square.

If the course locations do not suit you then please contact us and we'll try to accommodate your needs.  We can run private courses for groups.

Recreational Skippers Ticket Course

Even if you've had some experience you'll learn a lot from this course we guarantee it.

This course consists of theory and practical training.

Theory

It is essential that all of our customers read the workbook and attempt the Department of Transport RST online quizzes prior to coming to the course.  This will give you a good level of knowledge but in our experience there will be several areas that you may not fully understand.

The Recreational Skippers Ticket Workbook is available as a free download from the Department of Transport or from the link in the 'Useful Links' on the right of this page.

Please ensure you are reading the latest 7th version of the RST Workbook.

Remember the theory exam is closed book and there is to be no assistance with the answers but help understanding the questions can be offered if needed. The theory session not only contains a quick revision to assist with the exam but we also cover dealing with emergencies, how, why and when to use safety equipment and, very important, how to use navigation marks and a marine chart to navigate safely.  We use visual teaching aids such as whiteboards, pictures, marine charts, navigation marks and we'll actually show you the safety gear to make learning easier and more interesting.  We also give away free learning tools.

Much of what you will learn here is not in your book but from many years of the trainers' personal experience.

Reading the workbook, trying the online quizzes and attending the theory training, you'll be more than prepared for the Theory exam which consists of 40 multiple choice questions. The pass mark is 34 out of 40.  On successful completion you will move onto the practical.

The training rooms are located close to the water for your convenience and provide shelter from the elements.  Toilets, tea and coffee are also close by.

Practical

This course also allows plenty of time in the boat to practice the 10 skills required by DoT. We will demonstrate and explain all 10 skills and once you have practiced these you will be assessed on all 10 skills.  We prefer the practical to be done in our boat (this is included in the price), that way if you make mistakes it won't damage your own boat.  Please check out our Free Boat Lesson offer!  You'll find all of these skills listed and described in Chapter 10 on page 90 of your Workbook.

Sadly, launching and retrieving a boat or jetski is not part of the Recreational Skippers Ticket Course, yet it's where most people seem to get into trouble!  Our Full Course will include this as well as explaining boat ramp etiquette.

On successful completion of the 10 skills you will be issued with your interim RST.  This allows you to legally operate a recreational vessel or jet ski immediately and is proof of competency until you receive your permanent RST through the post from the Department of Transport.

The course typically takes approximately half a day to complete.

Remember, we're committed to the safety of our customers and we go above and beyond basic government requirements.  Our courses take a little longer, that's because we want you to be safe!
